Origami Decorations: Framed Pinwheel

This is a gorgeous decoration designed by Tomoko Fuse. It's a variation of the framed flower that I posted a few weeks ago.

The instructions to fold the framed pinwheel can be found in the book, Motif Pastern of Origami, by Tomoko Fuse, ISBN 9784569707730.
I folded the pinwheel with an octagon cut from a 6" (150 mm) square of red washi paper, and the frame with a 6" (150 mm) square of hand made paper.

Origami Flowers: Begonias - New Video

The nice Spring weather is already here. Let's celebrate it by folding some origami flowers!
Origami Flowers: Begonias - New Video
The begonias are my design.
Each begonia is folded with two pieces of paper, one 6" (150 mm) square for the corolla, and one 3" (75 mm) square for the calyx.

If you want to give them a try, you can find video instructions below. Make sure that you choose a thin, but strong paper, better if it's the same color on both sides. I used thin crisp washi paper.

Origami Quilt

When folding an origami model,  I usually choose the model that I would like to fold first, and then I look for the paper that will go well with it.
This time it happened the other way. I bought some tiny squares (2") called "Transparency Crane Folding Origami Paper", mainly because I was curious about the type of paper, and then I start looking for a model that will look nice folded with them. The paper is a little thick, translucent, with a pattern similar to the floral harmony paper, and it folds well.
I ended up folding a quilt, designed by Tomoko Fuse.

The quilt consists of seventeen interlocked modules.  The instructions to fold it can be found in the book, Motif Pastern of Origami, by Tomoko Fuse, ISBN 9784569707730.

Experimenting with Fabric Folding: Crane, Sunflower, and Party Dress

I've been wanting to experiment with fabric folding for a while.  A few days ago, when visiting the sewing aisles of a local craft store, I came across a packet of 5" squares of cotton fabric used for quilting, so I decided to give it a try.
Before folding, I stiffened the fabric using the same technique that I use with paper: I laid the fabric squares on top of an acrylic plate, painted it with a Methyl Cellulose solution, and let it dry overnight.
As I usually do when trying any new paper, I folded a traditional crane first.

The treated fabric kept the shape very well, so I tried a few more models, that folded very nicely too.

The Sunflower is a model created by Nilva Pillan. The instructions can be found in the book, Doctor's Origami Dream Book, ISBN 9784255003788, by Toshikazu Kawasaki.
The Party Dress is model created by Alison Reisel. The instructions can be found in the book Minigami: Mini Origami Projects for Cards, Gifts and Decorations.
