Holidays Origami: Panettone Mold

Origami skills can sometimes come in handy in the kitchen. For example, like this variation of an octagonal box designed by Tomoko Fuse, that I used as a panettone (or "Pan Dulce") mold.
Holidays Origami: Panettone Mold
The instructions to fold for the octagonal box can be found in the book Origami Boxes from a Single Sheet, ISBN 4480872035, page 58. In the original instructions the paper was divided into 9 sections, with one overlapped section.
Instead, to make the mold sturdier, I divided the paper into 12 sections, cut one off, and overlapped 3 sections. As you can see in the picture above, the mold did the job very well and did not unfold at all. I also modified the height of the box to get a mold of about 5" (125 mm) tall.
I used a 30" x 15" (750 mm x 375 mm) rectangle of Reynolds Genuine Non-Stick Parchment Paper (27½" x 15" after I cut one section), which, by the way, it's a very nice paper for folding.

Happy Holidays!

Holiday Decorations: Reindeer and Tree

What's your favorite reindeer? Is it Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, or Blitzen? Or is it Rudolph?
Holiday Decorations: Reindeer and Tree
The reindeer was designed by Jun Maekawa. The diagrams are available in his book Genuine Japanese Origami, Book 1.
I folded the reindeer with an "A" (1: √2) proportion rectangle, that I cut from a 14" (350 mm) square of tant paper.
The tree was designed by Tomoko Fuse. The diagrams are available in her book, 12 Months in a Small Box - Autumn Winter, ISBN 4480873406.
I folded the tree two 6" (150 mm), one 4" (100 mm) and one 3" (75 mm) squares of tant paper of tant paper.

Merry Christmas!

Origami Boxes: Christmas Tree Box

Christmas is so close...! This Christmas Tree Box is very easy to fold and will be perfect to contain small presents.
Origami Boxes: Christmas Tree Box
The instructions can be found in the book Beautiful Origami Boxes, by Tomoko Fuse.
The book shows how to fold the base and the lid of the box (pages 22 & 24). To obtain a more "tree like" box, you just need to fold two more lids with smaller paper, and stack them on top of each other.
I folded the box with tant paper, a 6" (150 mm) square for the base, and 6" (150 mm), 4" (100 mm) and 3" (75 mm) squares for the lid.

Origami Animals: Bear

Ready for Christmas? Little origami animals are great stocking stuffers. You can put a bunch of them in a small origami box to protect them while they wait for the kids to discover them.
So here is one cute bear, designed by Tomoko Fuse, which is simple enough to be folded with small paper.
Origami Animals: Bear
The instructions can be found in the book Origami seasons, by Tomoko Fuse.
I folded the bear with a 6" (150 mm) square of regular origami paper.

Holiday Decorations: Origami Rings and Wreaths

Origami Rings and wreaths are perfect decorations for the Holiday Season. Here are some beautiful ones, designed by Tomoko Fuse.
Holiday Decorations: Origami Rings and Wreaths

Holiday Decorations: Origami Rings and Wreaths
The instructions can be found in the book Origami Rings & Wreaths, by Tomoko Fuse, which is my favorite book of modular origami rings.
Each ring was assembled with eight modules, folded from 3" (75 mm) squares of kami (regular origami paper).

Depending on the size and type of paper you choose, modular origami rings can have different uses. Here are some suggestions:
  • Door wreath: 12" (300 mm) squares; scrapbook paper (or any paper thicker that kami). It will need a water resistant coating if hung outdoors.
  • Christmas tree decoration: 3" (75 mm) squares; kami (or any paper of similar thickness)
  • Holiday card ornament: 1½" (38 mm) squares or smaller;  thin washi, double tissue (the smaller the squares, the thinner the paper needs to be)
  • Paper jewelry (earring, pendant, bracelet charm): 2" (50 mm) squares or smaller;  thin washi, double tissue (the smaller the squares, the thinner the paper needs to be). They will need a water resistant coating if you want them to last.
Happy Holidays!

Halloween Decorations: Good Witch

I think this is probably a good witch. She doesn't look scary, does she?
Halloween Decorations: Good Witch
I created the good witch doll with traditional kusudama pieces. I was inspired by the paper dolls from the book Creating Lovely Paper-Flower Dolls.
I folded the kusudama pieces with 8” (200 mm) and 4” (100 mm) squares of scrapbook paper.
I completed the doll with a Sets of doll head and hands and a few accessories.

Origami Decorations: Beetle

This Beetle is so much fun to fold! As it's folded with several sheets of paper, you can combine different colors and accessories to create variations.  So here is "Lady Beetle", ready to go to a Halloween party.
Origami Decorations: Beetle
The Beetle model was created by Halle. The instructions are available in the books Origami Europe: Colour edition, and Origami Europe: Black and white edition.

Origami Decorations: Lilies in a Bottle

This bottle is a very nice model, particularly if you fold it from a translucent paper, that I haven't seen posted in origami blogs or pictures around the web for a while.
Origami Decorations: Lilies in a bottle
The bottle was designed by David Brill. The instructions are available in the book Origami for the Connoisseur, by Kunihiko Kasahara and Toshie Takahama.
I folded the bottle with a 6" (150 mm) square of cellophane paper. It is a little challenging to work with cellophane. Reversing a crease is difficult, and it wrinkles easily, as you can see in the picture.
The cap is a traditional masu box. Instead of using the size of the paper recommended in the book, I used a 3"square of origami paper, and adjusted the bottom of the box to fit the size of the bottleneck, to get a deeper cap.
Inside the box I put three traditional lilies, each one folded with  a 1 ½" (38mm) square of foil paper.

This herd of origami elephants is on its way to the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, in the UK.
The Zoo is trying to raise awareness of the plight of elephants by breaking the world record of the most origami elephants made and displayed. The goal is to create a display of 30,000 elephants, one for each Asian elephant left in the wild.

Origami Boxes: Box Decorated with Washi Tape

I recently bought some Japanese Washi Masking Tape, which is a translucent paper tape that comes in several beautiful patterns. It can be used in a lot of craft projects, and I used it to decorate the origami box in the picture below:
Origami Boxes: Box Decorated with Washi Tape
To make sure that the tape will show in specific areas of the box, I first folded the box with plain copy paper and unfolded it, keeping in mind the specific areas I wanted to decorate. Then I applied the washi tape in those areas, and refolded the box, reinforcing the creases where the tape was applied.
The box was designed by Tomoko Fuse. The instructions are available in her book, Origami Boxes from a Single Sheet, ISBN 4480872035 (in Japanese).
I used two 4¼" x 11" (108 mm x 279 mm) rectangles of color copy paper, one for the bottom of the box and another one for the lid.

Origami Decorations: Butterflies

Michael Lafosse's origami butterflies are gorgeous, and very fun to fold. But be careful, once you fold one you will not be able to stop till you fold all of them.
That's what happened to me, I end up folding all the butterflies available in the books Origami Butterflies Kit, and Michael LaFosse's Origami Butterflies: Elegant Designs from a Master Folder. Here is a picture of them decorating a wall at my home.
Origami Decorations: Butterflies
I used 6"(150 mm) squares of duo origami paper, and 2" (50 mm) squares for the three smallest on the left.
I stuck the butterflies to the wall using Saunders UHU Tac Removable Adhesive Putty Tabs.
